The Starving Artist Weighs In

Acrylic on canvas

36" x 30", 2004

The phrase “Starving Artist” has annoyed me so much that I have made several paintings of the subject just to exorcise it from my mind. In this piece, the starving artist has become my alter ego. He is everything I am not. He is confident, fearless, unashamed of himself, successful, and spiritually enlightened about art. Although he is both anemic and anorexic, he is still a contender in today’s high stakes, winner takes all art world.
