Commissions, Public Art Projects

In 1999 I was commissioned to design two works for a new Brooklyn Elementary School, PS 7.

“WE ARE THE FUTURE” is a mural composed of imagery drawn by thirty students form P.S.7. I worked with this group of young students for a total of eighteen two hour sessions. The lower section of the mural is made up of portraits that the students drew of each other. The upper section, made up of futuristic spaceships and the interstellar space time continuum, was created from drawings done from the imagination. Edited from six hundred drawings, I composed these individual images into one large interior scene. The full scale maquette was then fabricated onto large ceramic tiles by Sherle Wagner Ltd., and installed onto a curved wall in the school lobby. The mural is 80” high x 136” long.

“JUMP ROPE” was commissioned for a large wall on the outside of the school. Measuring forty two feet long by twenty six feet high, this image is constructed out of more than three thousand oversize bricks. P.S. 7 is located at 858 Jamaica Avenue (corner of Crescent Street), Brooklyn, New York. By subway the “J” train stops directly in front of the school. These works were commissioned through the SITES FOR STUDENTS program of the NYC Board of Education and the NYC School Construction Authority.Collection of the NYC Board of Education.
